Mt Maunganui accommodation

Mount Maunganui

Mount Maunganui is one of New Zealand's top holiday destinations, boasting glorious beaches, Mt Mauao walking tracks, hot water pools, surfing, fishing, kayaking and sailing.

Add to that a fantastic selection of shops, bars, cafés and restaurants and it is not surprising that during the summer the population increases dramatically.

The Mount Maunganui main beach is directly in front of the Pavilion Beachfront Apartments. It's white and sandy, with rocky headlands between the Main beach and what's known as shark alley (just a name!).

About the Mount

Downtown the Mount is situated near the foot of Mount Maunganui (Mauao). The land area of "The Mount" is a narrow peninsula that separates the sheltered waters of Tauranga Harbour from the pristine white sand beaches and the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. On the eastern side of the peninsula are world-recognised surf and swimming beaches where many national and international sports competitions take place.

Downtown the Mount is located just around the corner from the Port of Tauranga, where around 50 cruise ships dock each summer. Magnificent Phoenix palm trees provide a relaxed subtropical atmosphere for outdoor dining and easy shopping. There is lots of free parking, and with the Farmers Market in the car park each Sunday morning, there is something for everyone.

Discover nearly 200 shops and businesses that meet your every need seven days a week — from beautiful boutiques to surf wear, from exquisite souvenirs and gifts to art galleries and everyday shopping. There are nearly 50 cafés, food outlets and award-winning restaurants to cater for all tastes, all ages, all cultures and all budgets.

The majestic Mauao provides easy, free walking tracks around the base which any age or fitness level can enjoy. For the more adventurous, there is a spectacular view of the coastline from its summit. Don't forget comfortable shoes, a camera and a water bottle!

Mount Main Beach

The Mount Maunganui main beach is directly in front of the Pavilion Beachfront Apartments. It's white and sandy, with rocky headlands between the main beach and what's known as shark alley (just a name!).

The main beach is patrolled in the summertime by members of the Bay of Plenty Surf Life Saving Association, and voluntary lifeguard patrols are present from October through to March each year.

Pilot Bay

On the opposite side of the Mount main beach, Pilot Bay offers safe swimming, ideal for families with young children. It is also an excellent environment for windsurfing or kayaking. Public barbecues are available on the grass alongside the wonderful new boardwalks. During the summer months, watch the cruise ships coming in and out.
